Mosquito School

Mosquito School is an educational science program that teaches students about the biology, ecology and control of mosquitoes. This free program is offered to all schools in Marin and Sonoma Counties for grades K-8. Mosquito School enables students to protect themselves, their families and even their pets from the dangers of mosquitoes

Components of Mosquito School

Public education specialist, Eric Engh. Public education specialist, Eric Engh.

  • In-Class Presentation - 45 minute interactive presentation that discusses a variety of grade-specific topics including: mosquito life cycle, mosquito biology, mosquito ecology, importance of mosquitoes, and control of mosquitoes. During the presentation, students are able to see live larvae magnified under a camera-microscope that is connected to a laptop computer.
  • Life Cycle Study Kit - This kit includes an emergence cage stocked with live larvae and pupae. Students are able to observe insect metamorphosis and behavior. The kit also includes live mosquitofish that demonstrate the predator-prey relationship between mosquitoes and mosquitofish.
  • Mosquito School Workbooks - These workbooks include grade-specific follow-up activities that supplement the presentation. There are also grade-specific Experiments & Investigations to be used in conjunction with the Life Cycle Study Kit. All workbook activities are designed to reinforce the California Department of Education Science Content Standards.
  • Follow-up visit - Each class is revisited by the presenter the Friday of the week following the presentation. At this time students are encouraged to share what they learned about mosquitoes and ask any questions that they may have after observing the mosquitoes in the Life Cycle Kit for a week.
